"Howbeit this kind goeth not out by prayer and fasting."--Matthew 17:21. At the beginning of every year almost everyone makes new years resolutions but by mid February they're all but forgotten. However, there are issues in most of our lives that we really wish we could change. Its something different for everyone and we are at a loss as to how to fix the problem. We've prayed about the issue, talked to our trusted friends, talked to our spiritual leaders, but no change. What to do?
I have found over the last two years that praying and fasting have brought me closer to God. Really. I now look forward to my praying and fasting times because I know that during that time frame nothing bothers me: Not silly people, not my problems, nothing. I did a lot of research and reading on fasting before and during the first year I started in earnest to pray and fast. I read books on the subject as well as of course the Bible. I'm purposely not giving any titles or scripture verses. I want you, if you're interested, to do the research yourself. Why? Because if you decide that what ever the reason you are praying and fasting for is important enough, you will do the research. You may find that praying and fasting are exactly what it will take to either get rid of that pesky issue in your life or at least give you what you need to live with it. By the way, this is not a fad. It's not a way to lose weight (though that's what will happen) It's not just another 'thing' to try. When you fast, you are entering another realm with God. Fasting enhances your relationship with Christ. You will get a lot of revelations, or 'downloads' from God. This is not just another idea because the other things you have tried have not worked. Proceed carefully and with common sense. If you have health concerns, speak to your doctor. There are all types of ways to fast. Again, do the research.
Well, it's January. I've made my list of goals (I don't call them resolutions), and the first one on the list is to pray and fast. That one I won't forget about by mid February.
